Blanchard, UHD Provost Deborah E. Bordelon, and Aldine ISD Superintendent LaTonya M. Goffney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n  <p><strong><em>\u201cLiteracy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics, and factories.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n  <cite><strong>Kofi Annan, Nobel Peace Prize Recipient<\/strong><\/cite>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The continuation of the Bilingual E-Library\u2014aimed at expanding access to educational tools and digital resources for Houston families\u2014was made possible through the work of Drs. Maria Bhattacharjee and Irene Chen, supported by a two-year, $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/content.presspage.com\/uploads\/2199\/c6dc8860-4ff9-456d-b348-1ea4703de036\/800_uhd-1414.jpg?x=1700146976028\" alt=\"UHD Bilingual E-Library Event\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The UHD Bilingual E-Library Offers the Following Benefits:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n  <li>240 families from two pilot schools (Bussey and Black Elementary) will participate in guided reading and writing activities using original stories created together.<\/li>\n  <li>UHD students in the Department of Urban Education will receive hands-on training as they assist these families.<\/li>\n  <li>UHD students majoring in Communication and Technology will contribute by producing digital books, videos, and educational games for the e-library.<\/li>\n  <li>The e-library\u2019s YouTube channel will provide instructional content on reading strategies for Aldine ISD educators, UHD teacher candidates, and families worldwide.<\/li>\n  <li>The project is expected to positively influence local learning outcomes and long-term economic growth as the City of Houston works to strengthen foundational reading skills.<\/li>\n  <li>Global reach\u2014the library is accessible online from anywhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the event, College of Public Service Dean Jonathon Schwartz served as emcee, with Provost Deborah E. Bordelon delivering opening remarks.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cAs part of every child\u2019s right to education, developing strong reading habits opens doors, expands possibilities, and improves quality of life,\u201d said Bordelon. She noted that a recent report indicated Harris County\u2019s economy could grow by $13 billion if adults improved their reading ability by even one level. \u201cWe are proud to partner with Aldine ISD to address this challenge\u2014and above all, to share the joy of stories and books with your students and families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/content.presspage.com\/uploads\/2199\/e3118b8e-7c23-4adc-90f0-0f5f94154a24\/800_nbeff4b3.jpeg?x=1700146988515\" alt=\"UHD Bilingual Library Event Photo 2\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt $2.5 million, the e-library expansion and upgrade grant is one of the largest active awards in our College of Public Service,\u201d stated UHD President Loren J. Blanchard. \u201cWhen it comes to collaboration, partnerships, and educational outreach, the Department of Urban Education sets a strong example.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cUHD\u2019s teacher preparation program is one of the leading sources of certified educators in the Houston area,\u201d continued Blanchard. In addition to the e-library grant, Dr. Elizabeth Stackhouse and Dr. Ron Beebe secured a $2.5 million, five-year U.S. Department of Education Title V Grant to support training and wraparound services for UHD students pursuing teaching certifications in high-demand subject areas.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cOur focus on language development and instructional training reflects our broader commitment to our students and the neighborhoods they serve,\u201d said Blanchard. UHD continues to act as a strong partner for the region, aiming to expand educational opportunities and promote long-term growth throughout Greater Houston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the University of Houston-Downtown<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is the second-largest university in Houston and has served the educational needs of the nation\u2019s fourth-largest city since 1974.
