Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month – UHD Bilingual E-Library

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at UHD Bilingual E-Library

Each year, from September 15 to October 15, communities across the nation celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month — a time to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The UHD Bilingual E-Library is proud to join this celebration by highlighting the importance of storytelling, language, and representation in shaping future generations.

Honoring Culture Through Literacy

Hispanic Heritage Month is more than just a recognition of history — it is a call to celebrate the voices that continue to shape our communities. The UHD Bilingual E-Library is dedicated to helping students and families access bilingual stories that reflect their heritage, encourage cultural pride, and inspire learning.

This month, we are featuring a special collection of storybooks written by Hispanic authors and stories that explore themes of identity, family, perseverance, and community. These resources give children the opportunity to see themselves represented in literature while strengthening their reading and writing skills in both English and Spanish.

Activities and Highlights

  • Spotlight Storybooks: A rotating collection of bilingual books that celebrate Hispanic heroes, traditions, and folklore.
  • Weekly Virtual Read-Alouds: Interactive sessions where students can follow along with bilingual stories and participate in comprehension activities.
  • Family Literacy Workshops: Events that combine cultural activities with reading and writing practice, encouraging families to learn together.
  • Heritage Crafts and Activities: Downloadable worksheets and projects that connect literacy with creativity, such as making papel picado, writing family stories, and exploring Hispanic music and dance.

The Importance of Representation

Representation in literature plays a key role in helping children feel seen and valued. When students connect with characters who share their language, culture, or traditions, it strengthens their sense of identity and belonging. This is why the UHD Bilingual E-Library remains committed to providing free access to bilingual educational materials for students and families across Houston and beyond.

How You Can Support

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we invite the community to explore our online library, participate in activities, and share the joy of bilingual storytelling. Every $5 donation helps expand our collection, develop new workshops, and reach more classrooms and families in need.
