Día de los Muertos Celebration at UHD

💐 Celebrating Día de los Muertos with the UHD Bilingual E-Library

On Saturday, November 1, the UHD Bilingual E-Library proudly celebrated Día de los Muertos at the UHD Northwest campus, in collaboration with Aldine ISD and Lone Star College. This meaningful celebration brought together families, students, and community partners to honor culture, tradition, and the beauty of remembrance.

Honoring Tradition and Culture

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a cherished Mexican tradition that celebrates the lives of loved ones who have passed away. Far from being a somber day, it is a time filled with color, music, and joy — a way to remember and keep alive the memories, love, and stories of our ancestors. Altars, flowers, candles, and photos all come together to symbolize the connection between generations and the importance of celebrating those who came before us.

At UHD, we believe that celebrating culture is essential to understanding who we are and where we come from. Events like Día de los Muertos remind us of the richness of our community and the power of unity through shared heritage.

Celebrating Culture Through Reading

Culture is not only celebrated through music, food, and art — it also lives in the stories we read and share. Reading allows families to pass down traditions, values, and experiences that shape identity and strengthen bonds. Through bilingual books, children and parents can explore their heritage, learn from diverse voices, and keep traditions alive with every page they turn.

The UHD Bilingual E-Library encourages everyone to celebrate culture through literacy. With bilingual stories, family-authored books, and over 100 learning games, reading becomes a way to honor culture, preserve language, and celebrate identity.

A Celebration of Achievement and Community

During the Día de los Muertos event, leaders from UHD, Aldine ISD, and Lone Star College delivered inspiring speeches about the power of education and community collaboration. The highlight of the day was the recognition of 12 families who completed the Bilingual E-Library coursework and wrote their own bilingual stories, which will soon be featured on the E-Library platform.

Guests also enjoyed campus tours, resource tables, and a panel discussion featuring Reyna Gomez-Tippets, Selena Garcia, and Valeria Aguillo, led by Dr. José Ricardo-Osorio, Dean of Public Service at UHD. Their discussion focused on family empowerment, education, and the importance of maintaining cultural traditions through literacy and storytelling.

It was a day filled with reflection, celebration, and community pride. The UHD Bilingual E-Library extends heartfelt gratitude to all partners, families, and students who made this event possible.
